What is Love, Mom?
Love, Mom is a compilation of
letters from an older generation to a younger one in need of guidance
or inspiration. It deals with topics that touch all of our lives:
finances, education, family, love, sex, friendship. In an essence,
it is an attempt to capture daily life and all of its complexities,
challenges, and fulfilling moments.
Why Love, Mom?
A few years back, my girlfriend Kristen
OMahony and I discussed our high school years and how we got
through them. I described my own recollection of being a noodly
and uncomfortable fourteen-year old teenage girl terrified by all
aspects of life, especially gym class. Ironically, it was this dreaded
class that would lead me to a sense of belonging and awareness.
I am referring specifically to my high school gym teacher Miss Detar.
It was Miss Detars words of wisdom and authentic nature that
made my freshman days bearable. This woman not only took the time
to understand my inhibited ways, she also shared her own high school
memories. Kristen spoke of women in her present life and from her
high school days that added so much value to her existence. Her
[Kristens] original vision, which I have since adopted and
expanded on, was to compile a book of letters written by women from
all walks of life. It is my hope, these letters will enable younger
women to realize their connection to all women, while at the same
time discovering their unique self.
